Time Square 82 (and 2023)

with Eva Tucek

In March 1982, Keith Haring's "Messages to the Public" exhibition, featuring the innovative use of the Spectacolor screen in Times Square, New York, became a landmark event in public art. Working alongside artists like Jane Dickson, who was also known for her pioneering work with the Spectacolor billboard, Haring brought his distinct animated imagery to the heart of the city. The exhibition showcased Haring's signature style - bold lines and dynamic figures, communicating social and political messages. This collaboration, integrating digital technology in public art, not only highlighted Haring's unique vision but also showcased the potential of electronic media in art, thanks to the contributions of artists like Dickson. This blend of art and technology captured the attention of a diverse audience, transforming the way art was experienced in public spaces.
